The last quarter of the year can sneak up on you faster than you think. Construction projects can be difficult to coordinate if planning is left too late, with deadlines looming, several trades working around each other and clients wanting projects finished before Christmas.
The key to a successful Q4 is not rushing through everything. It’s about knowing what’s ahead and getting everyone to move in the same direction.
Start With What Needs Finishing
Before adding more work to the programme, look at what is already in progress. What projects will we turn over this year? What areas are awaiting another trade? Has the material been ordered? Is there any decision holding things up?
It is better to go through each project properly, rather than assuming that everything is on track. A little delay in October can be a big problem by December.
A simple list may help:

- Areas that need another trade before work can continue
- Client decisions that are still outstanding
- Final check and handover dates
Keep Communication Simple
When you have several projects going at the same time, communication can get pretty messy. There may be a lot of different information on what is going on next from site teams, suppliers, engineers, contractors and clients.
This can be prevented by regular updates. It does not mean long meetings every day. A quick chat, a clear email or a short site update can be all it takes to ensure everyone knows what’s changed and what needs doing.

The last few months of the year don’t always happen as planned. Weather can affect work done outdoors. Materials may come in later than expected. People go on annual leave, and suppliers may have different opening times around Christmas.
If possible, allow some flexibility in the programme. If it’s got a long lead time, deal with it early, rather than hope it will turn up when needed.
Labour is no different. When you have construction projects all running next to each other, knowing who’s available and where they’re needed can help a lot.
Finish the Year Properly
